Mega Millions Jackpot Second-Largest in U.S. History

DENVER, December 16, 2013 – The jackpot has risen to an astonishing $586 million for Tuesday night’s drawing, with a cash option of $316.5 million. The Mega Millions jackpot is the accumulation of 21 consecutive drawings without a top prize winner. The current jackpot run-up started on October 4 as a $12 million grand prize. It's the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot and the fourth-largest in U.S. lottery history. The record jackpot is $656 million, shared by players in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland on March 30, 2012.

While no one became a multi-millionaire following Friday's $425 Mega Million drawing, a ticket worth $1 million was sold in Colorado. The ticket was sold at a Conoco on Smoky Hill Road in Centennial. It was one of nine $1 million tickets purchased across the country. The numbers drawn Friday were 19-24-26-27-70. The Mega Ball was 12. The winning ticket hit 5 out of 5 with no Megaplier, had the player purchased the Megaplier for an additional $1, the ticket would have been worth $2 million.

Effective on October 19, 2013, several changes were made to the Mega Millions game with larger and faster-growing jackpots, better overall odds of winning any prize, increased second-level prizes, and more excitement. The game now has a starting jackpot of $15 million and second-level prizes ranging from $1 to $1,000,000. Jackpot odds have increased from 1 in 176 million to 1 in 259 million and overall odds went from 1 in 40 to 1 in 15.

Players can multiply wins up to 5 times the original amount by purchasing the Megaplier for $1 more. The Megaplier option multiplies all prizes, except the jackpot, by the multiplier number, either 2, 3, 4, or 5, as drawn by the Lottery. Players who purchase the Megaplier option will win the higher prizes when they have a winning match in the Mega Millions game.

Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 43 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets cost $1 each. Mega Millions drawings are held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9 p.m. MDT, tickets must be purchased by 7:30 p.m. on the day of the drawing.
