Canon City Winner Hits $20,000 Cash 5 Jackpot

DENVER – Gloria Melnik of Canon City got an early birthday present this year. The Leo, born on July 23, matched all five numbers in the Colorado Lottery Cash 5 game on July 5 and won the $20,000 jackpot.

Melnik picked her numbers, using a combination of special birthdays, and has played the same numbers for four years. When she saw her winning numbers on the television screen, excitement and shock set in. “I couldn’t believe it. I had to run out to my car to get the ticket.”

The California native, who turns 71 this month, immediately shared the good news with her husband of 54 years. He only had one question: “Are you going to share it with me?” She laughed and said that she hasn’t decided how she’ll spend her winnings yet.

The winning numbers were 7, 16, 17, 18 and 23. The winning ticket was sold at JR's Country Store in Canon City. The retailer receives a $200 bonus for selling the winning jackpot ticket.

In Fremont County, more than $9 million in Lottery proceeds have helped to improve community facilities, local parks and nature trails such as the Fremont County Events Center and Regional Sports Complex, Royal Gorge Park Infrastructure and Penrose School Recreation Area and Ballfield.

Proceeds from the Colorado Lottery’s games - Scratch, Lotto, Powerball and Cash 5 - stay in Colorado to improve the quality of life in the state. In 2006, more than $120 million was returned to Colorado. Since the lottery started in 1983, more than $1.8 billion has been returned to the state.
