TOWN OF DEL NORTE WINS COLORADO LOTTERY STARBURST AWARD FOR LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN PARK PROJECT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DENVER, Oct. 16, 2013– The Colorado Lottery has awarded a 2013 Starburst Community Award to the Town of Del Norte for excellence in the use of Lottery dollars for the Lookout Mountain Park project. The Town of Del Norte utilized a Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant of $132,350, Lottery-funded Conservation Trust Fund dollars of $11,500 and Lottery-funded State Parks/Colorado Greenway dollars of $161,200 for the project.

The Town of Del Norte utilized Lottery dollars to purchase more than 140 acres to create the 200-plus acre mountain park. By deed and resolution it will remain undeveloped and be used only as a trails and recreation park. The purchase has allowed the town to connect the High School directly to the trails system and to expand the wellness uses that border the new hospital. The project has created continuity between federal, state and local entities and resources that benefit the entire San Luis Valley.

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Community Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in community projects implemented to enhance a community’s environment.

In Fiscal Year 2013 alone, the Lottery distributed $135.6 million in proceeds. Since its creation 30 years ago, the Lottery has returned more than $2.5 billion to the state.

The Colorado Lottery is a division of the Colorado Department of Revenue. Colorado Lottery proceeds are distributed to three primary beneficiaries: Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), Conservation Trust Fund and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. These organizations then provide grants and direct funding for parks, recreation, open space acquisition, trails, wildlife and conservation education.
