Bicyclists have another reason to gear up in western Colorado with the completion of the Kokopelli section of the Colorado Riverfront Trail.
To celebrate this milestone achievement, the Colorado Lottery will present at Starburst Award to the City of Fruita at Tab Benoit Concert at James M. Robb State Park on Thursday, July 11 at 6:45 p.m. The $4 million project, completed in October 2018, was made possible with two Lottery-funded grants: $2 million from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and $300,000 from the Conservation Trust Fund.
The Kokopelli section of the Colorado Riverfront Trail, provides Fruita visitors and residents access to iconic outdoor recreation spaces via a non-motorized trail where they would previously have to load their bikes on a vehicle and drive 5 miles to the west to access the Kokopelli Trail System. Visitors who camp at the James M Robb Colorado River State Park in Fruita or who stay at one of several hotels can now easily ride their bikes or hike 4.5 miles to access the iconic outdoor recreation spaces in McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. Fruita residents also realize a direct benefit from this new trail section as they can ride their bike or hike directly from their driveway and access the Kokopelli Trail System via the Lower Little Sat Wash Trail and Kokopelli Section of the CRT.
Since 1984, the City of Fruita has received $9.9 million in Lottery proceeds, including more than $5.4 million from the Conservation Trust Fund and more than $4.5 million from Great Outdoors Colorado.
The Colorado Lottery Starburst Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in community projects implemented to enhance a community’s environment.
In FY2018 alone, the Lottery distributed $140.7 million in proceeds. Since its creation 36 years ago, the Lottery has returned more than $3.2 billion back into the state of Colorado. Lottery proceeds are distributed to three primary beneficiaries: GOCO, the Conservation Trust Fund, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. These organizations provide grants and direct funding for parks, recreation, open space acquisition, trails, and wildlife and conservation education.
