Cortez receives Starburst Award for Pickleball Courts at Centennial Park

Get those paddles out, Cortez, and let’s celebrate that new pickleball court!

The City of Cortez will receive a Colorado Lottery Starburst Award at Centennial Park on Saturday, June 15 at 9 a.m., at the Cortez Pickleball Spring Mixer. The $189, 547 project, completed in May 2018, was made possible with $187,547 in Lottery proceed funds from GOCO and the Conservation Trust Fund. The remaining funds came from individual donations.

The Pickleball Court project replaced the two 35-year-old tennis courts in need of renovation with six pickleball courts.  These new courts are available at no charge and help provide a fun and healthy activity for all generations of Cortez residents and visitors.

Since 1984, the City has received $1,204,000 from the Conservation Trust Fund (CTF) and $1,212,000 from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), both using Lottery proceed funds. Montezuma County has received $45 million from the Colorado Department of Education’s BEST fund (Building Outdoor Schools Today); $6.5 million from CTF and $10 million from GOCO.

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in community projects implemented to enhance a community’s environment.

                                                                        ###

In FY2018 alone, the Lottery distributed $140.7 million in proceeds. Since its creation 36 years ago, the Lottery has returned more than $3.2 billion back into the state of Colorado. Lottery proceeds are distributed to three primary beneficiaries: GOCO, the Conservation Trust Fund, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. These organizations provide grants and direct funding for parks, recreation, open space acquisition, trails, and wildlife and conservation education.
