Just 13 votes sealed the victory for this Lakewood favorite
It’s official—the City of Lakewood’s Bear Creek Trail is a people’s champion! Out of nearly 13,000 votes cast across Colorado, Bear Creek pulled ahead with 2,069 votes, edging out the competition by a nail-biting 13 votes.
The recognition follows a major revitalization funded in part by a $500,000 Conservation Trust Fund grant. The project added 12,000 feet of soft-surface trail alongside the concrete path to ease congestion, plus new bridges, concrete repairs, wayfinding, and rerouted sections to boost safety, accessibility, and habitat protection.
Now, visitors can enjoy shaded stretches, water access, and scenic overlooks, while local wildlife thrives in a healthier corridor. With all these improvements, annual visitation is expected to climb to 600,000, proof of just how much this trail means to the community.
The race for the Starburst People’s Choice Award was close, with Hanging Lake and Fort Lupton’s Community Park in the top three. But the voices of Colorado have spoken: congratulations to the City of Lakewood on their 2025 People’s Choice win!
