DENVER, February 18, 2014– For only the sixth time in the history of the U.S. lotteries, a jackpot has grown to $400 million or more. The winning ticket will be worth an estimated $227.8 million in cash. Wednesday's mammoth jackpot is the result of 15 consecutive draws without a winner. The run-up started as a $40 million prize on December 28, 2013. Even though nobody won the jackpot last Saturday, 10 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 2 from Florida, 1 from Georgia, 1 from Iowa, 2 from Michigan, 1 from New York, 1 from Ohio, 1 from Pennsylvania, and 1 from Texas.

This is the largest Powerball jackpot since August 7, 2013, when 3 winning tickets split a $448.4 million grand prize. The highest Powerball jackpot ever was $590 million last May.

By implementing a larger starting jackpot that grows more quickly, Powerball has created the four largest jackpots in the game’s 20-plus-year history in the past two years alone.

Last Saturday’s Powerball drawing marked the two-year anniversary of the current Powerball game design, and the improved features have paid off big for players across the nation. When the current game was introduced January 15, 2012, the Multi-State Lottery Association that governs the Powerball game predicted at least 300 millionaires created per year, and Powerball delivered. In the last 24 months, Powerball has created 1,013 millionaires, an average of more than 500 millionaires per year or nine millionaires per week.Fifteen of those winners have been sold in Colorado; seven winners of $2 million (with the Power Play option) and eight winners of $1 million.

Top 10 United States lottery jackpots of all time

Wednesday's Powerball jackpot currently stands as the 6th-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States and the 4th-largest Powerball jackpot ever. Brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

If nobody wins Wednesday, it's anyone's guess how high it will go.

Powerball drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 8:59 p.m. MST. Powerball is a multi-state game with a starting jackpot of $40 million and other prizes ranging from $4 to $2 million. To play, consumers choose five numbers from 1 to 59 and one Powerball number from 1 to 35. Players that match five numbers and the Powerball win the jackpot. Players can also opt to spend an extra $1 for a Power Play option, which gives players a chance to win $2 million on the match 5 numbers prize and increases the lower-tier prize amounts.
