Montrose Recreation District to receive Starburst Award for Community Recreation Center.

DENVER – The Montrose Recreation District (MRD) will receive a Colorado Starburst Award for using Lottery proceeds towards the constructed of the Montrose Community Recreation Center. MRD used a combination of Lottery proceeds to construct the multi-million dollar facility, including $792,000 in Conservation Trust Fund dollars and a $350,000 Lottery-funded grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO).

The award will be presented to the Montrose Recreation District at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the recreation center.

“We are very grateful for the critical support provided by Lottery dollars in building Montrose's parks and recreation system,” said MRD Executive Director Ken Sherbenou. “Lottery dollars are leveraged tremendously in enabling numerous projects including, most recently, the Montrose Community Recreation Center (CRC).”

After years of waiting, the Montrose Community Recreation Center opened its doors in early 2017 to unprecedented success. The 25,000-square foot facility has everything you could think in a rec center, including two pools, climbing walls, expansive locker rooms, four basketball courts, six dedicated pickleball courts, half-acre multi-use field and a trail that loops the facility. In a town of just over 20,000, the rec center has more than 7,000 annual pass holders and has sparked the movement for a new school and other recreation amenities in Montrose.

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in outdoor recreation and conservation that enhance a community’s environment.
