Mesa County Resident Wins Top Prize in Lottery Scratch Game

DENVER - It was no joke for Vickie Thurston of Grand Junction on Saturday, April 1. She couldn’t believe her luck when she won $40,000 in the Colorado Lottery’s Scratch game $3 Double/Triple Crossword. Fortunately, friends and family convinced her it wasn’t an April Fools’ joke.

The C & F Food Store, located at 3199 Mesa Ave. in Grand Junction, sold the winning ticket.

In Mesa County, about $45 million in Lottery proceeds have helped to improve community facilities, local parks and nature trails such as the Colorado River Greenway, Fruita Natural History Center, Vega State Park and Canyon View Park in Grand Junction.

Proceeds from the Colorado Lottery’s games - Scratch, Lotto, Powerball, and Cash 5 - stay in Colorado to improve the quality of life in the state. In fiscal year 2005, more than $103.7 million was returned to Colorado. Since the lottery started in 1983, more than $1.6 billion has been returned to the state.
