Lucky Streak Wins Lakewood Couple Top Prize in Cash Spectacular Game

DENVER – John Varnes and Jan Curry of Lakewood didn’t let one win stop them from trying again. The couple won $500 on one Scratch ticket and decided to test their luck again – on the same day at the same store. They became the newest winners of the Colorado Lottery’s $35 Million Cash Spectacular game. The top prize is $500,000, so the couple walked away with a $355,000 check, the payment after tax withholding.

“I would have been happy with a $10 winner, so we couldn’t believe it when we saw the ticket,” said Varnes. “This hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

The couple have been playing Colorado Lottery Scratch games since the Lottery began in 1983. They plan to use the windfall to buy a home and possibly a motorcycle for John.

The winning ticket was sold at 7-Eleven, located at 2790 S. Wadsworth in Denver.

Launched on May 8, $35 Million Cash Spectacular is the Lottery’s newest $10 Scratch game. It offers $35 million in total cash prizes, which is the most prize money awarded in any Scratch game in Colorado. There are five top prizes left – four instant prizes and the second-chance drawing of non-winning tickets. Other prizes range from $10 to $100,000.

Proceeds from the Colorado Lottery’s games – Scratch, Lotto, Powerball and Cash 5 – stay in Colorado to improve the quality of life in the state. Since the lottery started in 1983, more than $1.7 billion has been returned to the state through the Lottery’s primary proceeds recipients. These organizations provide grants and direct funding for parks, recreation, open space acquisition, trails, wildlife and conservation education.
