LUCKY WEEK ENDS WITH BIG WIN FOR POWERBALL PLAYER

FORT COLLINSForget all those myths about Friday the 13th and bad luck. For one Colorado Lottery player today marks the end of one of the luckiest weeks of her life. Last Sunday, Cathy Ortiz won $1,260 playing slots in Black Hawk. A day later, she won $500 on the Colorado Lottery’s Free Ride Scratch game. The next day, while cashing in her winning ticket, she bought ten more Free Ride tickets as well as a few Lotto and Powerball tickets. Thursday morning, Ortiz realized that one of those Powerball tickets was worth $50,000.

Ortiz matched four of five numbers plus the Powerball number in Wednesday night’s drawing. Because she opted for Power Play (which costs an extra $1) and the Power Play multiplier was 5, Ortiz turned the standard $10,000 prize into $50,000. The winning numbers were: 3- 7- 13- 34- 47 and the Powerball number was 30.

“I’m a gambler and my husband is probably thinking ‘Thank God.’ She finally got all her money back,’”   laughed Ortiz.

The prize will come in handy for Ortiz who lost her job as a small truck operator last fall. Although she owns a home in Cheyenne, WY., Ortiz and her husband have been staying with a son in Evans. She says the windfall will allow her to make a down payment on a house in the Fort Collins area, where she was raised. She also plans to use the money to pay off her daughter’s car and buy a used car for her daughter-in-law.

Proceeds from Powerball and the Colorado Lottery’s other games – Lotto, Cash 5 and Scratch – stay in Colorado to improve the quality of life in the state. Through Great Outdoors Colorado, the Conservation Trust Fund and Colorado State Parks, the Lottery has provided $2 billion in funding since 1983 to build new trails, preserve open space, construct recreation centers and protect wildlife habitat. Larimer County has received more than $76 million in support since the Lottery’s inception.
