Staunton State Park Opens to Public in May 2013 - On May 18 the State of Colorado welcomed Staunton State Park as its newest State Park. The park ranges in elevation from 8,100 feet along Elk Creek to 10,240 feet near the summit of Black Mountain and embodies an exceptional cross-section of native Colorado ecosystems. The 3,700-acre property is located just outside the Denver metro area.

The Lottery is proud of the significant role we played with more than $11.44 million dollars to making the park a reality. Staunton State Park has a rich history and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife's website provides interesting reading about how the lands were donated and acquired to build Staunton.

Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Celebrates 20 Years of Distributing Lottery Funds - GOCO was created twenty years ago in 1992 when Colorado voters directed a portion of Lottery proceeds towards Colorado's wildlife, parks, rivers, trails and open spaces. Using those Lottery funds, GOCO continues to invest in communities throughout the state. Happy Anniversary Great Outdoors Colorado!!

Valmont Bike Park - We ran into pro downhillers, riders from out of state and international tourists while shooting this piece. This is truly a world-class bike park and it's FREE. There are multiple courses for multiple disciplines and riders of all ages. Watch the Schleeter brothers tear it up on the XL slopestyle course. This park was funded with Colorado Lottery proceeds as well as Get Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) funding.

Salida Whitewater Park - This amazing whitewater park consists of two waves and three playholes. In addition to kayaking, the park boasts a place for kids to access the river safely, walkways, picnic areas, great fishing and much more.

Georgetown Bighorn Sheep Festival 2012 - GEORGETOWN, Colo. --Where can you find a fall family outing that gets you outside enjoying the splendor of Colorado wildlife within the charm of a historic mountain town? The 7th annual Georgetown Bighorn Sheep Festival is a kid-friendly, educational, and economical way to make some memories with your loved ones. Timed to coincide with the sheep's head-banging mating season, this year's event will take place Nov. 10.

Visitors can locate sheep with the help of trained Colorado Parks and Wildlife volunteers, armed with spotting scopes and binoculars. Enjoy a cup of hot cider or cocoa and a brief lesson on these majestic mammals at the Bighorn Sheep Viewing Station, next to picturesque Georgetown Lake. A shuttle will help transport visitors from bighorn sheep viewing areas to downtown Georgetown for educational presentation and activities. Friends and families will enjoy the FREE educational programming and numerous activities provided throughout the day.

Calhan Receives $865,000 in Lottery Funds - The town of Calhan is very appreciative of Great Outdoors Colorado, The Colorado Lottery and the Department of Local Affairs for their generous contributions of time and resources. These contributions have enhanced the quality of life in Calhan and the whole town benefits from new playgrounds and ballparks.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park Fall Colors - More than 12,000 acres of dense forest, rocky peaks, and aspen-rimmed meadows laced with miles of trails awaiting the hiker, horseback rider, mountain biker and winter sports enthusiast at Golden Gate State Park.
Only 30 miles from Denver, Golden Gate Canyon offers such amenities as a electrical hook-ups and tent-sites in two different campgrounds, stocked fishing ponds, picnic sites and the Panorama Point Scenic Overlook, where visitors can see 100 miles of the Continental Divide. The park's numerous group facilities can host several types of events, from weddings to family reunions and company picnics.

Besides camping, overnight guests can also stay at one of the five cabins and two yurts at Golden Gate. In 2008, the park began renting out guest houses, a first for a Colorado State Park. Winter will find visitors cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, ice fishing and ice skating.

Molas Lake - Molas Lake Campground was granted to the Town of Silverton in 1925 from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The 137-acre campground sits along the Million Dollar Highway (US 550) in the central San Juan Mountains; the most spectacular peaks in the Colorado Rockies. The Campground is adjacent to the largest wilderness area in the state of Colorado, the Weminuche Wilderness.

Molas Lake Campground provides visitors with unforgettable scenery, a stocked 25-acre lake, National Forest access via the Colorado Trail, and dark, starry skies free from light-pollution. The campground and day-use amenities were completely renovated in 2008. There are more than 50 campsites serving tent-campers, small RV's and pop-ups, and a few sites over 1,500 square feet to serve even the largest RV's. Colorado Youth Corps Working at Chatfield State Park - Governor Hickenlooper granted $1,000,000 of GOCO/Colorado Lottery funds to The Colorado Youth Corps creating over 400 jobs at no cost to the taxpayers. We visited with The Youth Corps while they were maintaining trails at the Platte River access trail in Chatfield State Park. These young people are learning group dynamics, leadership skills, a strong work ethic and environmentalism while they give back to their community.

William Frederick Hayden Park at Green Mountain Getaways - Great hiking, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, birdwatching and dogwalking within minutes of Denver. This is a great place to see the wildflowers bloom in Lakewood, Colorado. And its free!

Trinidad Lake Getaways - This beautiful lake in Southern Colorado has a mild climate and a long season. Trinidad Lake offers great boating, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing and is the best place in the world to view the KT Boundary. The KT Boundary is a layer of ash deposited deep within sedimentary rock that indicates a cataclysmic event that ended the age of the dinosaurs. The park offers very ample and modern facilities for the whole family including a visitor's center with educational displays, interpretive trails, coin op laundry, RV hookups and coin op showers. The park is very quiet and very clean.
