COLORADO LOTTERY REPORTS SALES OF MORE THAN $500 MILLION

DENVER  The Colorado Lottery posted $501.2 million in sales for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, thanks to the addition of two new games and strong sales of Powerball tickets. That figure represents a slight increase from the previous year’s sales and the second best sales performance on record. The Lottery also continued to generate significant funds for its beneficiaries, returning $112.9 million to the state to support open space conservation, wildlife protection, trail construction and other recreational efforts.

“We’re proud of our performance,” said Colorado Lottery Director Abel Tapia. “We think these results show that our players continue to enjoy our games and have embraced our new offerings.”

Sales of Lottery tickets overall, increased 1.6 percent in FY10. Big jackpots drove sales of Powerball up to $101.5 million from $100.7 million the year before. Sales of Cash 5 also grew, jumping from $20.8 million in FY09 to $21.3 million in FY10 - another record year for the game. Cash 5 sales were helped by the addition of a seventh drawing on Sundays. The Lottery’s two newest games – MatchPlay and Mega Millions, generated $6.2 million and $2.4 million in sales, respectively. MatchPlay, which offers players four ways to win, launched in February, while Mega Millions began selling in mid-May.

Lower jackpot levels had an impact on Lotto sales, which dropped 4.4 percent from $43.5 million in FY09 to $41.6 million in FY10. Scratch sales were flat, falling by less than $150,000 to $328.1 million.

As in years’ past, the Lottery’s top retailers in FY10 were located near the Wyoming border. Borderline Cantina and Stateline Oasis, both in Weld County, were the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked retailers statewide. The King Soopers at 3100 S. Sheridan Boulevard in Denver ranked third.

Sales generated by the Lottery’s 3,000 retailers raised nearly $113 million for the agency’s proceeds partners - Great Outdoors Colorado, the Conservation Trust Fund and Colorado State Parks.  The three organizations received the following contributions from sales of Lottery tickets in FY10:

  • Great Outdoors Colorado: $53.4 million
  • Conservation Trust Fund: $45.2 million
  • Colorado State Parks: $11.3 million

In addition, the Lottery returned $88,550 to the Public School Capital Construction Assistance Fund.

The Lottery also returned more to players in FY10. In total, the Lottery paid out $307.7 million in prizes in FY10, compared to $296.5 million in FY09. Several players joined the hundreds of Coloradoans who have become millionaires playing Colorado Lottery games. Nine people won $1 million in FY10 by matching five of six numbers in Powerball and choosing the Power Play multiplier feature for an extra $1. Another six winners joined the millionaires club by winning Lotto jackpots.

“We expect to carry the momentum we established this fiscal year into the next,” Tapia said. “Our two newest games should provide bigger contributions during their first full year of sales. We also anticipate adding more lottery outlets to our retail base, providing more places for people to purchase Lottery tickets.”
