POWERBALL JACKPOT HITS ALL TIME HIGH OF $500 MILLION

POWERBALL JACKPOT HITS ALL TIME HIGH OF $500 MILLION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DENVER, November 27, 2012– The jackpot for Wednesday night's multi-state Powerball drawing has been raised to $500 million – the highest Powerball jackpot ever! The winning ticket will be worth an estimated $327 million in cash.

This is only the second time in the history of United States lotteries that a lottery jackpot run has exceeded $400 million. The highest jackpot in U.S. history was a $656 Mega Millions jackpot on March 30, 2012. Previously, the highest Powerball jackpot ever was $365 million in 2006.  This historic prize is the result of 15 consecutive draws without a winner. The run started as a $40 million prize on October 6, 2012.

Powerball drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 8:59 p.m. MST. Powerball is a multi-state game with a starting jackpot of $40 million and other prizes ranging from $4 up to $2 million. To play, consumers choose five numbers from 1 to 59 and one Powerball number from 1 to 35. Players that match five numbers and the Powerball win the jackpot. Players can also opt to spend an extra $1 for a Power Play option, which gives players a chance to win $2 million on the match 5 prize and increases the lower-tier prize amounts.

Proceeds from the Colorado Lottery’s games – Mega Millions, Cash 5, Scratch, Lotto, Raffle and Powerball - stay in Colorado to improve the quality of life in the state. The Lottery has returned more than $2.4 billion to the state of Colorado since it was established. Through Great Outdoors Colorado, the Conservation Trust Fund and Colorado State Parks, the Lottery has provided funding for new trails, precious open space and wildlife protection.
