CITY OF RIFLE WINS COLORADO LOTTERY STARBURST AWARD FOR THE CENTENNIAL PARK PROJECT

DENVER, September 20, 2011The Colorado Lottery has awarded a 2011 Starburst Community Award to the City of Rifle for using Lottery dollars to complete the Centennial Park project.  The City of Rifle utilized a Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant of $750,000 to help construct the park.

Centennial Park serves the entire region by providing passive recreation amenities and opportunities, historical and environmental education, and a residential/community connection to the Rifle downtown area for individuals of all ages. The park provides needed bike and pedestrian trail connections to the middle school and existing city and proposed county trails, and city/state parks. Centennial Park works a seam that knits the east and west parts of Rifle together into a common community. Other unique features of the park include: a water splash park, sundial, bench and knee-wall seating, a large amphitheater and a large lawn area.

“Once considered nothing more than an overgrown flood plain for Rifle Creek, it is now one of the shining examples of Rifle’s dedication and perseverance to improve and further develop the City Parks and Trail system,” said Aleks Briedis, recreation director for the City of Rifle. “It is a tribute to the history and people of this dynamic community.”

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Community Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in community projects implemented to enhance a community’s environment.

In Fiscal Year 2011 alone, the Lottery distributed $113.4 million in proceeds. Since its creation 28 years ago, the Lottery has returned more than $2.2 billion to the state.

Lottery proceeds are distributed to three primary beneficiaries: GOCO, Conservation Trust Fund and Colorado State Parks. These organizations then provide grants and direct funding for parks, recreation, open space acquisition, trails, wildlife and conservation education.
